Introduction
There are many ways to achieve your long-term financial goals while also leaving a legacy to the Alzheimer’s Association Minnesota-North Dakota. The Alzheimer’s Association offers you a variety of planned giving arrangements. Please notify the Association of your intent to make a planned gift, so that we may provide any help you need as well as thank and recognize you appropriately. For more information about any of these planned giving options, please contact Rebecca Stibbe, Director of Development, at 952-857-0537 or e-mail rebecca.stibbe@alz.org.
The Founders Society
The Founders Society is an honorary society created by the Alzheimer's Association as a way to recognize and thank those who have made a bequest or lifetime gift. As a Founders Society member, you become eligible to receive the following:
Wills and Bequests
If you’d like to write the Association into your will or add a codicil, the essential language to be included should read:
"I give, devise, and bequeath (indicate specific dollar amount, percentage of estate or specific property) to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, Inc. Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter dba Alzheimer’s Association Minnesota-North Dakota (Federal TIN: 41-1361624)."The Association’s regional center address is 4550 West 77th St, Suite 200, Minneapolis, MN, 55435.
Gifts of Retirement Plans
These days many companies offer qualified retirement plans that allow employees to defer paying taxes on a portion of their income until the assets are withdrawn. Designating the Alzheimer's Association as the beneficiary of a retirement plan allows you to pass on those dollars tax free, instead of leaving a tax burden to your heirs or estate. Examples of plans to consider include 401(k), 403(b), Keoghs, and traditional Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs).
Gifts of Life Insurance
Create a significant endowment for the Alzheimer’s Association without dipping into your capital assets. Gifts of life insurance offer you an opportunity to make a contribution to the Association, perhaps even more than you ever thought possible! For example, your surplus, paid-up life insurance policies can be used to fund a gift to us.
Life Income Gifts
If income is a concern to you, a solution to consider is one of several vehicles that actually provide income payments to you and/or a loved one. These vehicles are called charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts. Life income gifts make payments to you for your lifetime or a term of years. Then, any remainder is passed on to the Alzheimer’s Association Minnesota North Dakota. For example, if you have a certificate of deposit paying a low annual amount, you might receive more by making a gift to ultimately benefit the Association. We’d be happy to talk to you more about this if you believe this method might meet your giving needs!
Gifts of Personal Property
Not all gifts have to be cash or securities. Many individuals opt to make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association of personal property that has value. For example, you may choose to contribute artwork, collectibles, equipment and other items that help us advance our mission. If you are considering such a gift, please call us first, as what you choose to donate may impact the amount of your charitable deduction.
Gifts of Real Estate
When it comes to charitable giving, there are plentiful opportunities. Gifts of real estate can be very advantageous, frequently allowing you to save thousands of dollars in income or estate taxes. We are happy to consider gifts of residential, commercial and undeveloped real estate, and the Alzheimer’s Association Minnesota-North Dakota has partnered with the nonprofit Minnesota Real Estate Foundation to accept such gifts. There are several giving options:
- Outright Gifts: You can make an outright gift of real estate to establish a donor advised, designated or field of interest fund much the same way you can give cash or stock. Your gift entitles you to multiple tax benefits, including a charitable tax deduction for the fair market value of the gifted real estate, an elimination of the capital gains tax due had you sold the real estate directly and an elimination of the potential estate tax on the gifted property.
- Gifts by Will or Bequest: You can also make a charitable gift of real estate through your will. You would avoid potential future estate taxes and your family will not have to deal with the upkeep and sale of the property, liability insurance and property taxes. Should you be interested in this gifting arrangement, the Minnesota Real Estate Foundation can provide suggested legal language to be used by your attorney.
- Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT): This option works best if you have highly appreciated, low-yielding real estate. A CRT allows you to make an irrevocable gift now, while receiving substantial tax benefits and an income stream for the remainder of your life, as well as for the life of your spouse. Benefits include the avoidance of capital gains tax from an outright sale of the property, an immediate income tax deduction for a percentage of the fair market value of the property, the avoidance of future estate taxes on the gifted property and a lifetime income stream.
- Retained Life Estate: If you want to retain the use of property for the remainder of your and your spouse’s lifetimes, you may still be able to give it to the Association now and receive an immediate income tax deduction for a portion of the current fair market value of the property.
